Body-size spectrum has proved to be a highly informative indicator to summarize the functional structure of a community at taxon-free resolution. In this study, an approach based on body-size spectrum of protozoan communities was used to detect the defense of microalgae against protozoan grazing. The biofilm-dwelling protozoan communities were used as a test predator system, and two algal species, Chlorella sp. and Nannochloropsis oceanica, were employed as test microalgae. A nine-day bioassay test was carried out by exposing biofilm-dwelling protozoan communities to a gradient of concentrations 100 (control), 104, 105, 106, and 107 cell ml−1 of both microalgae, respectively. Results showed that both algal species represented strong defense effects on the test predator system at different levels of concentration. The body-size distinctness of the protozoan assemblages showed a sharp decrease at high concentration level more than 106 cell ml−1 in both algal treatments. Based on the paired body-size distinctness indices of the protozoa, ellipse tests demonstrated that the body-size spectrum showed an increasing trend of departure from the expected pattern with increasing concentrations of both test algae. Thus, it is suggested that the body-size spectrum of protozoa may be used as a useful indicator to identify the defense of microalgae against protozoan grazing. 相似文献

Aim
The aim of this study was to investigate the biogeography of plant zonation in salt marshes on the Pacific coast of South America; to examine whether salt marsh plant zonation varies with latitude; and to explore the relative importance of climatic, tidal, edaphic and disturbance factors in explaining large‐scale variation in salt marsh plant community structure.Location
A 2,000‐km latitudinal gradient on the Pacific coast in Chile, with a climate shift from hyper‐arid at low to hyper‐humid at high latitudes. Methods
Plant zonation was quantified in field surveys of ten marshes. Climate, tidal regimes, edaphic factors and disturbances (tsunami and rainfall floods) were determined. We used multivariate analyses to explore their relative importance in explaining large‐scale variation in salt marsh plant community structure. Results
Across latitude, marshes were dominated by distinct plant communities in different climate regions, especially at the extreme dry and wet latitudes. Intertidal plant species zonation was present in hyper‐arid and semi‐arid climates, but not in arid, humid and hyper‐humid climates. Latitudinal variation in low‐marsh plant communities (regularly flooded at high tide) was largely a function of precipitation, while at high marshes (never flooded at high tide) latitudinal variation was explained with precipitation, temperature, tidal cycles, soil salinity and disturbances.Main conclusions
Salt marshes on the Pacific coast of South America belong to Dry Coast and Temperate biogeographic types. Salt marsh plant zonation varies across latitude, and is explained by climatic, tidal, edaphic and disturbance factors. These patterns appear to be mechanistically explained by extrapolating experimentally generated community assembly models and have implications for predicting responses to climate change. 相似文献45.
Climate change in our backyards: the reshuffling of North America's winter bird communities 下载免费PDF全文
Much of the recent changes in North American climate have occurred during the winter months, and as result, overwintering birds represent important sentinels of anthropogenic climate change. While there is mounting evidence that bird populations are responding to a warming climate (e.g., poleward shifts) questions remain as to whether these species‐specific responses are resulting in community‐wide changes. Here, we test the hypothesis that a changing winter climate should favor the formation of winter bird communities dominated by warm‐adapted species. To do this, we quantified changes in community composition using a functional index – the Community Temperature Index (CTI) – which measures the balance between low‐ and high‐temperature dwelling species in a community. Using data from Project FeederWatch, an international citizen science program, we quantified spatiotemporal changes in winter bird communities (n = 38 bird species) across eastern North America and tested the influence of changes in winter minimum temperature over a 22‐year period. We implemented a jackknife analysis to identify those species most influential in driving changes at the community level and the population dynamics (e.g., extinction or colonization) responsible for these community changes. Since 1990, we found that the winter bird community structure has changed with communities increasingly composed of warm‐adapted species. This reshuffling of winter bird communities was strongest in southerly latitudes and driven primarily by local increases in abundance and regional patterns of colonization by southerly birds. CTI tracked patterns of changing winter temperature at different temporal scales ranging from 1 to 35 years. We conclude that a shifting winter climate has provided an opportunity for smaller, southerly distributed species to colonize new regions and promote the formation of unique winter bird assemblages throughout eastern North America. 相似文献

The phytoplankton community of the Belarus Lakes Naroch, Myastro and Batorino, which have a Trophic State Index of 42.3, 60.7 and 66.8, respectively, underwent drastic changes to their structure during the period between 1968 and 2012. Thanks to an extensive monitoring program, these changes were well-documented and were qualitatively interpreted as signs of the community destabilization. The main objective of this study was the quantification of the ecological stability of the phytoplankton community in the Naroch Lakes. The approach to the quantification of ecological stability was based on defining the stability index as an inverse of the Euclidean Distance between the current and the reference states of the algal community (EuD-approach). The stability of the phytoplankton community was characterized by two indices: a “combined” index (SI[Comb]), and a “total community” index (SI[TotB]). SI[Comb] was calculated based on the individual taxonomic group biomasses and thus characterizes the stability of a community structure. SI[TotB] was calculated based on the values of the total algal biomass. Analyses of the results of this study extended the plausibility of the EuD-approach for the quantification of lake phytoplankton stability and allowed us to identify the dynamics of the stability of the Naroch Lakes phytoplankton. For the Naroch Lakes, we observed relatively larger SI[TotB] values in comparison with the SI[Comb] values. The results enabled us to examine the relationship between the lake trophic status and the stability of the phytoplankton community. 相似文献

Reproductive allocation (RA) plays a vital role in the development of ecological strategies during the life cycle of plant species. Invasive alien plants (IAP) may exist at various invasion degrees across a gradient of the colonization process with several grades of relative abundances in the occupied environments. The progressive variation in the invasion degree of IAP has the potential to modify their RA strategy. This study purposes of estimating the RA strategy of the IAP Solidago canadensis L. and the correlations among RA of S. canadensis, the invasion intensity of S. canadensis, the invasiveness of S. canadensis, and the community invasibility across a gradient of invasion degrees by using the field sampling experiment. The height and relative abundance of S. canadensis did not remarkably affect its RA. The RA of S. canadensis was positively related to its reproductive biomass and total biomass. The key reason may be that plant individuals with higher total biomass can allocate more resources into sexual reproduction. The RA of S. canadensis was positively related to its invasiveness. Thus, the RA of S. canadensis may be crucial to its invasiveness. 相似文献

Body size may be more important than species identity in determining species interactions and community structure. However, co‐occurrence of organisms has commonly been analysed from a taxonomic perspective and the body size is rarely taken into account. On six sampling occasions, we analysed patterns of killifish co‐occurrences in nestedness (tendency for less rich communities to be subsamples of the richest), checkerboard structure (tendency for species segregation), and modularity (tendency for groups to co‐occur more frequently than random expectation) in a pond metacommunity located in Uruguay. We contrasted co‐occurrence patterns among species and body size‐classes (individuals from different species were combined into size categories). The analysis was performed at two spatial scales: ponds (communities) and sample units within ponds. Observed nestedness was frequently smaller than the null expectation, with significantly greater deviations for body size‐classes than for species, and for sample units than for communities. At the sample unit level, individuals tended to segregate (i.e. clump into a checkerboard pattern) to a larger extent by body size rather than by taxonomy. Modularity was rarely detected, but nevertheless indicated a level of taxonomic organization not evident in nestedness or checkerboard indices. Identification of the spatial scale and organization at which ecological forces determine community structure is a basic requirement for advancement of robust theory. In our study system, these ecological forces probably structured the community by body sizes of interacting organisms rather than by species identities. 相似文献
